Mental Health Hotlines

Important Note About 988 (the National Mental Health Crisis Hotline) and other hotlines: If you’re thinking about suicide but not taking steps to act on it, 988 counselors or other hotline counselors are not likely to call law enforcement without your consent, but will provide resources and referrals. But, if you’re at imminent risk and could act on a plan to hurt yourself/others, police may be called, and you could be taken to a hospital involuntarily. The involvement of law enforcement significantly increases the risk of injury, deportation, or death in cases regarding mental health crises, especially for people of color, disabled, autistic, and trans folk.
